After weaving with willow for many years I discovered Rush. What a joy! Its soft, silk like and malleable qualities are gentle on the hands and very light weight. Its colours vary from light gold through gentle greens to bronzy hues. The craft has clear techniques to learn and, once mastered, produces useful and practical products. It can become a wonderful sculptural medium.
This rush-weaving course is an introduction to Rush Weaving. This almost lost craft can be brought alive again with your help!! The aim of the day is familiarise students with rush and produce an artefact that they are pleased with.
There will be a short introduction to the plant and its historical uses, this will include where it grows, how it is harvested and prepared.
Firstly you will be taught how to select and prepare your rushes. Secondly you will be taught some basic techniques, including the Checkerboard weave, pairing and bordering down. You will aim to make a platter/ table mat in the morning and a small square basket in the afternoon. After that, you can go on to create your own pieces.
Have a look at the Wikipedia entry on rush hats to give you ideas!
Assington Mill is a 70 acre organic farm in a beautiful secluded hidden valley in Suffolk. We aim to provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, where you will enjoy the experience of spending time with like-minded people and learning something new and life-enriching. Around fifty-five different short courses in rural and traditional craft skills are run here each year.
We aim to provide healthy meals during our courses made from locally-sourced organic ingredients, where possible. Lunches usually consist of soup and salads. Almost all the ingredients, if they are not grown here, come from Assington Farmshop, and are organic if possible. Cakes and biscuits are also home-made. We specialise in gluten-free food and are happy to cater for any other dietary requirements if you give us notice on the booking form.
Accommodation is available at many BnBs in the area (please see the list on our website) or you could stay in Mill Cottage on site. Alternatively, Camping is also possible at Assington Mill for £5 per night, anywhere on the farm. There is a toilet and shower available in a wetroom; plus a kitchen with two hobs and urn. We are not a proper camp site; this is just a facility for people coming on the courses.

A very enjoyable course. Rush is an amazing material. Have learned some very useful skills – how to harvest, dry and store. How to make a basket using various techniques and make rope. Great for gardening! Nadine is a fantastic friendly and very knowledgable tutor and fabulous venue and catering. Highly recommended.
An excellent course. The instructor was aware of everyone’s level and helped each student in a positive and encouraging manner. Everyone seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the day and were thrilled to take a finished article home. Mary B
