The Detector Detective- how metal detecting can help you see into your village's past.

Section one. 10-11.30 The story of the metal detector and how they work.  Great finds made by amateurs.  How the equipment aids local history researches. What can be found and reading the landscape.  Pottery types and field walking clues. Interpreting the evidence and building a picture of what once went on the now empty fields . Darren's thirty five years experiences.

Section two. 11.45 -1pm   Finding out a farms background. Gaining permission to search. (Role play) Creating a farm archive with field reports. Find drawing and map marking. Liasoning with Archaeologists and the local community. The Treasure Act. Beach detecting and garden prospecting.

Section three. 2-3.15   OUTDOOR PRACTICAL  Learning how to operate a detector and what signals to listen out for. Responsible practices and the Countryside code. Recording find spots.

Section four. 3.30-4.30  Preserving finds and storage. Clubs and rallies. Activity where by a 'farm' is given to the group (split into teams) whereby they demonstrate some of their new found knowledge of how to go about their own survey. Questions and answer session to round things off
