Coracle-making

Date:

Tutor:
Richard King
Cost:

The coracle is a very ancient type of boat, light enough to carry on your back and load into, or on top of, the car.  Please measure the inside of your car before you come, or bring a roof rack.

The boat you will be making to take away is made of willow, starting with strong sticks pushed into the ground and bent over to form the skeleton.  From then on thinner willow branches are woven around until something looking like a large basket is made.  This is covered with canvas and then painted with bitumen.  Richard will make you a paddle or you can buy your own later.

To keep the costs down, the course is only three days long, which means that you will have to work fairly long hours, and as fast as you can, so an appropriate level of fitness is necessary .  There will be an opportunity to paddle some of our coracles during the evenings, so that you can learn the technique in relative safety, but please bring a life jacket if you want to do this.

There are only five places available so early booking is advisable.

Materials

Please bring £30 to pay Richard during the course.

What to Bring

Work clothes, including sun hat

Thin work gloves for handling the willow
