Born into a farming family at Faulkbourne in Essex, Robert has always been interested in shooting, and several of his relatives go hunting.  Through shooting, he often came across foxes and became fascinated by them.

Whilst recovering from a serious back injury, he wrote his first book, "Foxing with Lamp and Rifle", followed by a second book, "Going Foxing".  Subsequently he has given talks all over the country on the fox, about shooting foxes, guns etc.  He has also advised the "All-Party Middle Way Group", whose objectives are to bring back hunting, arguing that this is amore humane way of fox control, whereas shooting can lead to wounding but not death.  He has also been used as an expert witness in court cases concerning fox control.
