An opportunity to observe and work with a local shepherd, Dek Mckinnon, during the lambing season.
We will start with an introduction at Assington Mill, before a big high tea, followed by a short journey to Dek's historic farm on the banks of the Stour Valley, not far from Sudbury. The pregnant mothers will be housed in small pens in a large ten-bay timber framed barn. The timing is set to go on into the night because that is when most of the lambs will be born, but you can leave whenever you feel you have had enough, or stay on all night, as Dek will.
The main course on Sheep Husbandry will follow this one on 24 May, when you can learn about looking after sheep and handle some of the slightly older lambs.
What to Bring
Warm and waterproof clothing including hat and gloves. You will be under cover but there will be no heating in the barn.
